National Hispanic American Heritage Month 2022
What is Hispanic Heritage Month celebration?
September 15th begins the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. From September 15 through October 15, 2022, Americans will celebrate the history, contributions and traditions of Hispanics past and present. More than 20 countries are called Hispanic, including Bolivia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Peru and Spain.
The observance of Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, it became a month-long event under the leadership of President Ronald Reagan. The 30-day timeframe is significant due to several independence days celebrated in Hispanic countries, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, El Salvador and Honduras.

2022 Theme
This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month theme is Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation. According to the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers, it “encourages us to ensure that all voices are represented and welcomed to help build stronger communities and a stronger nation.”
Hispanic Population Growth
The 2020 U.S. Census demonstrates our country’s population is more diverse than ever. The number of people who identified as Hispanic increased to nearly 19% in 2020 versus 16.3% in the 2010 census.

What does Hispanic mean?
While many people use Latino(a) and Hispanic interchangeably these two words mean different things. A Hispanic person is someone who comes from or is a descendant of a Spanish-speaking country. Latino(a) is used when referring to someone who comes from Latin America or is a descendant from any Latin American country. A person can be both Hispanic and Latino(a), but not all Latinos are Hispanic. Brazilians, for example, are Latinos, but their native language is not Spanish. Conversely, not all Hispanics are Latino(a). Spaniards are considered Hispanic, but not Latinos, since they are part of the European Union.
Hispanic countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
Latin American countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
